The winner of the Matthew George Young Stockman Award for 2011 is Ms Tahnee Manton a young breeder from Inverell in New South Wales.
As a young child Tahnee Manton probably didn’t think twice about farming, but through doing agriculture at secondary school she developed a passion for breeding and showing cattle. This led her to complete a Batchelor of Agriculture Degree and today Tahnee is the Stud Manager for Mundoo Angus at Glencoe on the Northern Tablelands of NSW. She also has her own Murray Grey & Angus studs running alongside the Mundoo Herd.
Tahnee has a wealth of livestock industry experience and has acquitted herself well at both regional and city shows since 2001 and has attended and supported Youth Cattle Training Camps from 2000 to the present time.
Amongst numerous awards, she was the Champion Angus Youth Parader at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2008/2009 and bred the Junior Champion Murray Grey Bull at the same show in 2008.
A highlight for Tahnee has been her involvement in Meat Judging culminating in her inclusion in the 2008 Meat Judging Team to represent Australia in the USA.
Described by her employer as a very honest, hard working and enthusiastic young lady; they have every confidence in her capacity to not only run the herd but also to be involved in other decisions such as pasture improvement. “Tahnee conducts herself in a professional and responsible manner and her knowledge is of a very high standard, giving 100% in everything she does”.
Tahnee is also a very active community member both a local level as well as at various levels throughout the industry including youth activities.
With an ambition to one day own her own property; to breed stud beef cattle and operate a sustainable beef cattle operation, she has a big challenge ahead.
During her overseas travel, Tahnee plans to visit Canada and the United States of America and is keen to gain new skills, learn new things and experience firsthand the livestock industry in these countries. She says, “It would mean a lot that I would be able to further develop my understanding and knowledge of breeding operations, feedlots, abattoirs in a different country and to further develop my fitting and judging skills of cattle. I will be able to make valuable contacts within the industry and their knowledge will be invaluable in all facets of the beef industry – from conception to consumption”.
